Learn More About the South Sioux City Symphony Orchestra

For over 100-years, the Sioux City Symphony Orchestra has entertained the people of South Sioux City and the surrounding areas with they’re beautiful sounds and entertaining performances. They’ve grown from just a 30-piece college ensemble to a 90-member professional orchestra. The start of the Sioux City Symphony Orchestra can be traced back to 1915, when the Morningside College Orchestra started, with the first public performance by the South Sioux City Orchestra being on February 27, 1916.

While the Conductor position has been passed around to only five other musicians, Ryan Haskins became the sixth Music Director and Conductor of the symphony in 2009. Ryan has proven himself to be an innovative and creative concert director and continues to draw crowds from surrounding areas for the orchestra's performances. During his tenure in the UK, Ryan held many positions with renowned ensembles and participated in many different festivals worldwide. Along with being an inspiring young conductor, Ryan also has a passion for inspiring young musicians, and often holds workshops around the world to help young musicians develop their skills and passion for music.

Ticket prices range depending on where you’d like to sit and can cost anywhere from $15 to $75. Season ticket holder options are also available. In addition to reasonable ticket prices, you don’t have to worry about dressing up to go to the symphony anymore, there’s no dress code! One of the biggest questions we get is, “Is it kid-friendly?” You know your child better than anyone else, so if you think your child would enjoy spending time watching an orchestra performance, we’d love to have them join you. Our performances are about two hours long, so if you think your child wouldn’t be able to sit through that, the symphony may not be the best option for them until they’re older.

Choose Your Events Wisely

There are many different types of networking events out there, so before you decide on an event you want to go to, put some research into it and find the best one that fits your career and goals. This park features fifty flags. The idea was a flag representing each state to commemorate patriotic pride in honor of all the servicemen and women during the Desert Storm War.  This is the place to take school age children as they are learning about the US and the history our fifty states!

Crystal Cove Park

A beautiful park located on the Southwest corner of South Sioux. Crystal Cove is a 60-acre park with lake, 1.5 miles bike/hike trail, nature trails, fishing & shelter for rent. In 2005 underwent a $1.5 million renovation project to dredge the lake to improve habitat enhancement. Here you can see  over 200 species of birds and wildlife.

Visitors love their bird watching The lake is stocked 3 times yearly with fish for summer and winter ice fishing. In 2011 a new 18-Hole Disc Golf Course was installed.

Danish Alps State Recreation Area (SRA)

Near Hubbard, Neb. is a 746-acre state recreation area on Kramper Reservoir, a 226-acre lake. Danish Alps includes RV and tent camping, equestrian camping facilities, day use areas, a walking and hiking trail and excellent angling and wildlife watching opportunities.

Kramper Reservoir, a 226-acre lake, was planned with shoreline fishing and boat fishing in mind, and a wide spectrum of aquatic habitat features were incorporated to make this new reservoir suitable for fish to reproduce and grow rapidly. The lake has been stocked with largemouth bass, bluegill, black crappie, walleye and channel catfish. Anglers are reminded that Kramper Lake is a no-wake lake and that live bait fish are not allowed. Boaters are asked to clean, drain and dry their boats to prevent the spread of aquatic invasive species such as zebra mussels. A Nebraska park entry permit is required for each vehicle entering the park.

Located 1 block off of Dakota Ave. It is home to Voss Fields & the SSC Legion Baseball. Voss Fields host multiple tournaments each summer including District and State Tournaments.

John Douangdara Memorial War Dog Park

This memorial is incorporated into a five-acre dog park, pays tribute to the devoted four-legged companions whose dedication to their masters was unparalleled in combat.

The park houses the Memorial in honor of fallen Navy SEAL, John Douangdara, who along with 29 fellow service members and his assault dog, Bart, were killed when their helicopter crashed in Afghanistan in 2011. It is connected to the Siouxland Trails system.

Siouxland Freedom Park

Here is 55 acres of land located in the heart of Siouxland along the banks of the Missouri River. In full view of the river’s bluff it is easily accessed from I-29 by simply crossing the Veterans Bridge, and turning directly onto Riverview Drive. The park houses the Memorial Dog Park in honor of fallen Navy SEAL, John Douangdara, who along with 29 fellow service members and his assault dog, Bart, were killed when their helicopter crashed in Afghanistan in 2011. Construction of a 5,000-square-foot Interpretive Center will be completed within the year.

On site - a 250’ granite wall engraved with more than 58,000 fallen service members from the Vietnam War. A fifty-space lighted concrete parking lot with a 150’ flagpole that flies the 30’x60’ American flag, are adjacent to the Wall and Interpretive Center.

Driver Safety Lunch & Learn

Join the Sioux City Chamber of Commerce on October 24th for a FREE Lunch & Learn event. This Lunch & Learn will feature a presentation about driver safety. Mark Segerstrom is currently working under a grant from the Nebraska Department of Transportation Highway Safety Office to talk to employers and employees across the state regarding the startling increase in road fatalities. In Nebraska, employers spend about $311 million per year on vehicle crashes. As an employer, you have fixed expenses associated with both on and off-the-job vehicle crashes.

Come to our free one-hour evidence based presentation to employees covering issues like seat belt and cell phone usage, and distracted and defensive driving. The purpose of this presentation is to remind your employees of the dangers on the road and encourage them to be mindful of their driving environment. The public is also welcome to attend and bring their own lunch with them. Coffee, tea, and water will be provided.

Relive the Middle Ages at the Sioux City Riverssance Festival

If you’ve never been to the Riverssance Festival, you really owe it to yourself to come out and join in the festivities this year! 2017 marks the 15th Annual Riverssance Festival, and this year’s event promises to be one for the (middle) ages! 2017’s Festival will be held at Riverside Park on September 30 - October 1, and it gives you the perfect opportunity to dress up as a knight, a rogue, a lady, or a wench and have the merriest time of your life!

While at the Riverssance Festival, you’ll have the chance to immerse yourself in authentic Medieval culture, from full armoured jousting, birds of prey, costumed characters and vendors, themed food and drink offerings, and singing and dancing. Both days begin with festivities at the opening gate, and end with a drumming event that you’ll feel to the depths of your being!

Your Costume

To truly get the most out of your experience at the Riverssance Festival, select a Medieval character type and dress the part! Grab a pirate hat and eyepatch, don a dusty apron and chef’s hat to go as a baker, or use your imagination and come up with your best royal or “wench” costume. Your garb can be as extravagant or as simple as you like, just have fun with it!

Entertainment

Riverssance Festival 2017 will include a wide variety of entertainment sure to delight patrons of all ages. Tap your toes to the sounds of strolling minstrels, join the show with the wandering characters, become part of the entertainment with the dance troupes, and try your hand at some of the feats of strength. One of the great things about Riverssance is that even the vendors become part of the entertainment by dressing in period garb. Each day at noon and 4pm, the jousters take to the field and put on a show that will be unlike anything you’ve ever seen!

Food and Beverages

If the number one rule of Riverssance is to have fun (it is!), the number two rule should be to arrive hungry! Food and drink offerings abound, and it’s the perfect time to sample that giant turkey leg, rack of ribs, or funnel cake you’ve been thinking about all summer. If you want to really commit to the Medieval spirit of the day, eat everything with your fingers! The more you let yourself get into the spirit of the day, the more memorable your visit will be.
